Meta-belief
A the most general level, a meta-belief is a belief about beliefs, both own and other's. In a more specific and useful sense, however, a meta-belief is to be taken in the theory of mind sense, i.e., as a belief about others' mental representations, and in particular their beliefs; it is in this specific meaning that it used throughout the project. In this sense, only socially intelligent agents can have meta-beliefs, because this implies the capacity to attribute beliefs and possibly goals to others. Meta-beliefs are at play when talking about reputation. Reputation implies that one or more agents have the meta-belief that something is believed by someone about one object or (group of) person(s). A meta-belief is a belief about a nested belief, such as "I believe that Mary believes that John is not trustworthy". Having a meta-belief does not imply that the nested belief is the same as one's own.
