Modern painters (and I'm talking particularly about main stream, fine art establishment, head up their own arses, Turner Prize type painters) really have lost the art of scaring the crap out of a person. Demons in particular, in fact anything demonic, and even vaguely religious, for that matter, seem to have been completely excised from their repertoire.
Maybe as a civilisation we have simply grown up; maybe it's the secularisation of society; maybe it's because horror flicks (with all that ravishingly convincing CGI) are supplying the necessary fix of hell-fire formerly dealt out by the painters of yesteryear. (I know, for instance, that the Roman Catholic establishment was well pleased with The Exorcist. And for very understandable reasons, if you think about it. It put bums on pews.
So, the Devil has forsaken the galleries of late; but, you'll be relieved to hear (or not), he's not completely vanished - just gone mobile. You'll see him, if you keep your eyes pealed, in all those grungy back alleys in the wrong side of the tracks. Let's face it he always was more of a street person; and this new environment really suits him.
But you just know that he's not going to be content with merely having his image daubed across inner city problem areas. He's got so much more style than that; and, what's more to the point, he's got a plan - and, as always, it includes you.
