“The extent of your consciousness is limited only by your ability to love and to embrace with your love the space around you, and all it contains”
NAPOLEON BONAPARTE
It is a key axiom of Chaos Magic, as expounded by Peter J. Carroll, that an individual's personal identity is, in fact, a bundle of separate entities; so much so that he refers to himself in the plural throughout his writings. The angel and the demon is a cliché that has been represented in religious art down the centuries.
Sigmund Freud Freud took this model and added a managerial level above them. also recognised divisions within the mind and called them 'complexes'. In his structural model of the psyche there are three key components to the psychic apparatus; the Id, the Ego and the Super-ego. The id is the set of uncoordinated instinctual trends; the ego is the organised, realistic part; and the super-ego plays the critical and moralising role.

The iceberg has become the standard metaphor for unconscious states. But this is not just a handy illustration of 'hidden depths'. Ice, after all, is just water in a different state; the conscious and unconscious elements of mind and the collective unconscious in which it floats are all fundamentally the same material existing in different states, as is consensus consciousness (clouds in the sky). In water these different states are caused by temperature variation. In water the laws of entropy mean that water will adjust to a mean temperature.
Unless water goes below zero degrees or above 100 degrees its state is stable; but differentiation still occurs. There can be strata and pockets of differing temperatures. If the collective unconscious is the sea in which we swim then maybe thre are discrete areas of temperature differentiation are the archetypes. (Entropy doesn't necessarily apply outside of the physical plane and these differentiated states could achieve stability, you never know.) Worship. Tinker-bell
Our perceived individuality again is just energy in a different state. WAVE You can't separate physical and psychological (just an arbitary construct) because its just another manifestation of energy. And quanta of energy is all there is in the final analysis.
A personal view of consciousness. A human unit; Ego, Id, Super-ego and
helpers afloat in the collective unconscious.
helpers afloat in the collective unconscious.
Super Ego arbitrates and negotiates between the (competitive) Ego and ID and makes pragmatic and moral choices based on a hierarchy of needs/desires (see below). This continual process resolves into the Personal Consciousness. When action is required, either of a cerebral or physical nature, the Super Ego can draw on the massively powerful resources of the Personal Subconscious. The Personal Subconscious in turn can draw on the Collective Subconscious (with which it is in continuous and intimate contact) should shortfall arise. Situated between the Collective Subconscious and Personal Consciousness is the Ambitious Robot. The Ambitious Robot's primary task is to take care of the autonomic functions of the body; but, as its name suggests, it is continuously attempting to extend its sphere of responsibility, which over time leads to a dulling of sensation. One of the key tasks of any mystical or magical practice is to selectively reduce the Ambitious Robot's workload and, by doing so, to differentiate your magical reality from everyday consensus reality.
