"The skill of writing is to create a context in which other people can think."

I believe that most religious philosophy, not just that of the three major Biblical religions, descends from one source.*
That source originates with Hermes Trismagistus.
The main centre of intellect and where the works of Hermes were stored was the Great Library of Alexandria.
With the destruction of the Great Library (3rd century CE) and loss of the Egyptian language the greater majority of 'Hermetic' works were lost.
However key fragments were preserved having been copied into Arabic and translocated pre destruction.
These writings re emerged in Europe via Greek translations in the beginning of the second millennia CE entitled the 'Hermetica'.
Scratch beneath the surface of all major religions and there you'll find evidence of Hermes.***
I believe that the Far Eastern religions preserve Hermes' philosophy in a purer form than the Biblical religions.
And that Buddhism not only preserved the philosophy but also refined and clarified it.

*Give or take isolated aboriginal communities and South America (despite archetectural and some cultural similarities and the death defying practical anthropology of Thor Heyadahl I can not bring myself to beleive that the gentle philosophy of Hermes could be corrupted into the Inca and Mayan blood cults, I could be wrong).
**Originally known as Thoth (later Hellenised as Hermes, and suffixed with the honorific 'Trismagistus' to avoid confusion with the indiginious Greek god of the same name).
***Despite widespread misunderstanding, obvuscation and corruption.
