“Force never moves in a straight line, but always in a curve vast as the universe, and therefore eventually returns whence it issued forth, but upon a higher arc, for the universe has progressed since it started.”
KABBALAH
KABBALAH
The Kabbalah is a systematic overview of how the universe functions, on every level, from the microcosmic to the macrocosmic. (That term alone gives you a profound indication of how precise a match the Kabbalah is with hermetic philosophy.) It provides an understanding of how humanity fit into nature, and how nature functions, from the lowest, most dense levels, all the way up to the most etheric and profound.
The graphical expression of the Kabbalah, the tree of life, provides a well trodden roadmap to guide us towards inner knowledge, and by following its principles a person comes to know where they are now in the scale of the universe; and how to traverse those levels and reach a better station in this life and the next.
As you can see from the examples below whenever there is a situation which appears to be chaotic which we seek to understand or control sooner or later we end up putting pencil to paper. That is, we create a static 2D representation of a dynamic 3D event. There can't be a bigger and more dynamic and difficult to understand subject than the whole of creation so the early Cabalists resorted to the time honoured graphical solution. It grew over time to cover the whole of below and then some. Human and divine psychology. To help us relate to that which the rational mind has no counterpart. The tree can get pretty crowded the trick is to not lose site of its essential simplicity. Elegant. The map is not the territory.

Take a trip to another country it's a sensible precaution to pack a map. Take a trip to another dimension and this requirement is so much more crucial. And if by map you mean a document which shows you where to go, how to get there, who you will meet along the way and which also plots the history of the universe right back to the big bang and explains how it all came about and why, the Kabbalah is precisely what you need.

A simplified Kabbalistic 'map' is displayed below. In its full glory it will make the map of the Moscow Underground look like the directions to Legoland. A basic understanding, however, of these ten stations* (yes, I know there are eleven; but Da'at isn't counted; don't ask, it's complicated) and the twenty two interconnecting pathways is enough for all practical purposes. The objective of studying the Kabbalah, therefore, is to gain an understanding of both the territory and the language of the spiritual worlds.
The Tree of Life (in the true spirit of the hermeticism) is both a map of the universe (macrocosm) and a map of the human body (microcosm), the stations of the tree closely mirroring the chacra system of eastern mystical and medical traditions.
